At dawn, the day seemed ordinary. Nothing about the hours preceding it suggested it would be eventful, or unexpected in any way. Morning routines began as they always did in the faint light before sunrise. Yawning stablehands and servants whispered prayers to Mithros, asking him to banish the thick fog; it was more habit than pressing need.

The fog presented Alanna with a minor annoyance. The one plan she'd had for the day was a long ride before breakfast. Mithros needed a run. Grousing to herself, she settled for grooming his coat to a shine, then trained in the yard until the sun was fully up and the fog began to recede. Breakfast itself was unremarkable. Quieter since Mike left, but much the same as always. After pushing her food around her plate, Alanna kissed her family goodbye (and Raph, jokingly, who then made a disgusted noise and wiped at his cheek) and set out for the ruins, intending to check up on things at Milliways.

But when she arrived in the clearing, something was different. The marble and stone walls looked the same, catching the morning light so they seemed to glow, and the black gate still dangled off its bronze hinges. To her left, she could see the big jet stone she'd once moved. The door, however, its wood darkened by the elements, leaned uselessly against one of the higher surviving walls. She pushed and pulled, cursed and cajoled, but the only thing on the other side was more rubble.

Pensive, Alana returned to the keep and said nothing to anyone for the rest of the day and night.

This morning was much the same. The fog had returned. Grooming, training, breakfast... Alanna's heart beat wildly until she returned to the ruins, and then it was a steady, audible thump in her chest.

The door still wasn't there. No notice, no explanation. It had simply ceased to exist.

This time, she turned on her heel and stalked home, looking for Adam.
