Alanna of Trebond (

At the sign of a wooden cup
Alanna is scared. She'll never admit to it, but she is, and she feels herself pale, as they approach the Street of the Willows. Riding double as they are, Alanna can't help but remember the first time she had come to Mistress Cooper with an uneasy feeling in her stomach and nerve-wracking thoughts in her head.

"This'll be George's mum, then?"
no subject
"Aye. Maybe we shouldn't bother her. For all we know, she's with Myles. Perhaps we should leave."
no subject
"We're not going anywhere but inside."
no subject
The horse stops as if she knows where she's going, for all that she is just a schooling mare. Alanna swallows. The healer's sign on the gate looks as freshly painted as the first time she saw it, the wooden cup circled in vivid brown and red.

There's an undercurrent in that last word, not quite a threat.

Lifting her leg up and over the horse's neck, she slides to the ground. Her feet hit hard, shocking her knees, and she leaves her forehead against the mare's warm mane.
no subject
He follows her to the ground, hand reaching out to run over her hair.
no subject
Which is really silly to say considering they are already there, but it makes her feel better.
no subject
He smiles at her, lightly, and squeezes tight for a long moment before letting go.
"Shall we?"
no subject
"She's probably not here."
no subject
His arms are wrapped around Alanna's shoulder as the door opens wider, and he smiles hesitantly at the weathered face that greets them.

"My dear! It's wonderful to see you!" She sweeps forward and gathers Alanna into a hug.
She pulls back and gives Adam an appraising look. "And this is your young man, I gather?"
no subject
She rocks from foot to foot.
"She's a healer," Alanna adds unnecessarily.
no subject
"I've heard much about you."
Which is sort of true. And it's what you say in cases like this. Right?
no subject
She cocks an eyebrow, "Have you now? I hope it was all good." She releases his hand with a smile and turns back to Alanna.
"He's a handsome one."
She turns back to Adam and gestures towards the door. "Please come in and make yourselves comfortable"
no subject
Adam looks at her, and eventually, she follows them inside. Wringing her hands, she glances around and laughs quietly to herself.
"It has been quite some time."
no subject
"Have you not been back since..."
no subject
"It has been far too long since you've come to see me, Alanna. I've had to hear about all your exploits from your father."
no subject
"Far too long, indeed. I'm sorry that we seem to always miss each other. I wanted you to meet Adam before now, but-"
She trails off and looks embarrassed, thinking about George. Mistress Cooper tends to make her feel like a youngster again, and so she reaches out to pour the tea before being told.
There's only a small wince followed by mostly concealed fumbling.

She chuckles at the spill. "Some things never change, child." She pulls a small rag from her pocket and offers it to her.
She has noticed Adam's attentiveness and as Alanna bends over the tray, Eleni's eyes trace her form. A small smile tugs at her lips.
no subject
"I thank you for that, and for all the kindnesses you've shown my father."
She swallows.
"Really, I'm fine."
no subject
"Yes, we've come because she's perfectly fine."
no subject
"Stand up, my dear and let's have a look at you."
no subject
She looks Mistress Cooper in the eyes, one hand unconsciously lifting to curl around the emberstone at her neck.
"I've been... sick, although it hasn't diminished my appetite much. Feverish, possibly."
no subject
"She's been throwing up nearly every night."
no subject
After a few moments, her eyes open and she gives the two a huge smile.
"Well, there's nothing to worry about. You are not ill, you are pregnant. Congratulations."
no subject
Pregnant.
Mouth hanging open and eyes bright with shock, Alanna stares straight ahead, dimly aware of a roaring in her ears.
Pregnant? Of course. What a lackwit she had been to not even suspect as much before now. All the signs were there. Had Maude taught her nothing?
But, but, but... pregnant, and she had gone adventuring with Indy. She had nearly died in Japan.
The roaring intensifies, and the color drains from her face. Goddess.
Alanna is not one of those women who faint gracefully. Not even close. In fact, when she makes an odd sound and keels sideways, it's vaguely reminiscent of a felled tree.
no subject
it's not as if Adam has much time to process it before Alanna faints, and his hand closes around hers tightly, pulling on her arm a little roughly as he tries to catch her. It's only then that he repeats his thought, and he apparently repeats it out loud as well, because Eleni is nodding at him with a strange sort of grin on her face, and that's when he hears the thud and sees Alanna no longer in his arms, but on the floor.

Alanna doesn't exactly come around gracefully, either. Lurching sideways, she rolls into a crouch and stares at the bottle with a disgruntled expression.
"That's disgusting."
Remembering why she fainted in the first place, she sits down. Hard.
"At least I didn't land on the tea? Mithros... pregnant?"
Entirely too awed to be embarrassed, she slowly looks up at Adam.

Nodding slowly, "we knew. Just... when?"
no subject
It's his immediate response, despite knowing full well that it CAN happen so soon. He just . . . didn't expect it. Still holding on to her hand, he wraps his other arm around her shoulder.
no subject
"The most important thing for you is to understand what your responsibilities are. The babe will be making you sick for a bit longer and will slow you down. You need to pay attention to what your body tells you. Plenty of rest and nourishing food."
no subject
"You know I take my responsibilities very seriously," she whispers, still a bit wobbly. "Tell me, is he taking notes down yet?"
no subject
"Seven months."
His voice holds still a bit of awe.

She squeezes their hands tightly. "I may have to visit the Temple to make a special prayer, just in case." Her eyes twinkle at them.
no subject
"So mote it be," she repeats firmly. Visiting the temple again suddenly seems like a wonderful plan, but it can wait. She is suddenly quite unable to look away from Adam. "Thank you, Eleni."
no subject
"Thank you."

Softly, "this is ever so much better than the Sweating Fever."
He nods and drops a kiss on her head, eyes following George's mother.
There will be much to discuss. Later. For now, neither one of them can say much at all, content just to smile.
