A few weeks have passed since Alanna was last in Milliways. Happy weeks full of the relaxation and relative quiet that comes with warm weather, when most members of the court return to their homes outside the city. George watches Alanna and Jon with thoughtful looks, but for the most part everything is as it always was, and the trio has had many an entertaining night at the Dancing Dove.

Alanna is happy.

She arrives in the Bar with half a mind to find Carol so she can report that everyone -- by which she means Jon and George -- is behaving with respect and honor, but it's Brienne she sees first. Brienne, to whom she had promised to tell the truth the next time they crossed paths. Alanna hesitates, because years of caution are hard to overcome, but remembers what she'd just thought about Jon, George, and honor. She will act honorably and keep to her word. Even if it's hard.

Alanna waits until she catches Brienne's eye and gestures to the back door with a smile, then exits. She doesn't wait to see if the other woman follows, because she doesn't want anyone else to get too curious about what she has to say. Outside, she leans against a tree and works on not looking nervous.

comments

It is a glorious day at the Caribbean inlet behind the bar at the end of the universe. The sun is bright and hot, the sand soft between toes, the water sparkling the sort of blue usually reserved for gemstones.

Then again, it is always a glorious day in the Caribbean inlet.

Alanna stands on a toasty rock with bare feet, shoulders back and eyes closed, letting the salty breeze whip her hair around her face and almost but not quite push her over into the sand. It makes her feel free: fee of ties, free of responsibility, free of her own wild thoughts and feelings.

Freedom is the dream, after all.

comments

Part of Alanna's plan to distract herself from the Ordeal and Jonathan -- the ordeal of loving Jonathan, Great Mother what is she thinking? -- is to spend more time at Milliways studying or training or even resting.

Of those three, it is no surprise that training more often than not wins out.

Today she is by the lake with Lightning in hand, practicing sword forms and fighting an invisible foe who looks a lot like Roger in her imagination. Her hair is longer than it should be, long enough that she stops to lift it so the cool breeze can reach her neck. It has grown warm, and she silently debates removing her tunic for the rest of her exercises.

No. Not yet. She can't become incautious and impatient now. Instead she reaches for the bucket she'd brought up from the lake and tosses some water in her face. The day she doesn't have to worry about these things will be a very good day, indeed. This one isn't terrible, however. It could always be cold. Smiling, she goes back to work.

comments

Alanna of Trebond is a surprisingly religious person. She prays regularly to her patron, the Goddess, and offers the proper respect and observances whenever her busy schedule allows. The Goddess should understand, Alanna believes, why a visit to the Temple is delayed or put off from time to time. After all, everything she does is as the Goddess commanded.

Well, almost. That whole love thing still pricks at her like that burr she found under Duke Gareth's saddle blanket, but that is of no actual importance, surely.

In any case, Alanna likes to think she does right by the Goddess. But sometimes, like right now, she remembers that the Goddess can be a force of nature, neither inherently cruel nor kind as the mood suits her.

And somewhere, Alanna is sure, the Goddess is having a good laugh over this one.

"I can't BELIEVE this is happening right now!" she hisses, peeking out from behind a bush that rivals her for prickliness. "Of all times to get caught up here!"

Squire Alan went for a walk around Corus today.

In a dress and a long black wig.

Squire Alan certainly did not mean to land herself in Milliways while she was out.

"Goddess," she mutters, "if this is some sort of test, I think I'd rather go ahead with the Ordeal!"

(Squire Alan really doesn't mean that, for the record.)

comments

Alanna is cold.

This is itself not news, but given her tendency to be cold even when sitting before a roaring fire, it is a bit odd that she has chosen to be outside the bar, where it is most definitely not as warm as it is in Tortall.

She shivers, grumpy to her core, and shuts the door hard on her way to a big tree near the lake. Practicing her forms under it will warm her up. If that fails, she can always climb it.

comments

OOC: Resetting Alanna

During the Allpocalypse, Alanna and Adam came back to the bar. Once I'd gotten the OMG, YAY! out of the way, it helped solidify some things. I love playing Alanna and don't want to stop, but LJ Alanna (as I will call the original version in order to differentiate) couldn't continue on as she was. She has always felt torn between duty to Tortall and duty to Milliways, and it was time for her to make a final, unalterable choice. The bar was imploding. Back home, she and Numair were on the verge of a diplomatic (har, har) voyage to Carthak that could and would change everything. It sets off years of war, years of Alanna being somewhere other than home, years of her duties as King's Champion coming first. Thus far, she has managed to juggle the bar and her duties at home, but that was going to have to change.

I am handwaving that she fought in the initial battles for Milliways, but soon realized she had to make that choice and chose Tortall. She regrets nothing.

As a result, LJ Alanna is unable to return to the bar. She will not be surprised by this, and frankly, might be a little relieved; at least she will be once she realizes Thayet and Raph remain capable of getting back and forth. She'll still be able to see those she'll miss most if they choose to visit. There will be OOMs, with Raph, Adam, the kids, and anyone else who wants them, but LJ Alanna won't be seen in the bar again.

Which makes way for DW Alan!

I've always regretted that I hadn't started out playing Alanna at an earlier point in canon. Thanks to this and some extremely effective enabling (*cough*Ashie*cough*), I am taking advantage of the one universe over clause to bring in Squire Alan from In the Hand of the Goddess, probably just after her fifteenth birthday.

What does this mean for in-bar pups who have known LJ Alanna? Well, what happened stays happened. That said, she is going to arrive as Alan and the secret of her identity is hugely important. I am hoping that those pups closest to or who respected LJ Alanna will quickly realize it would be best not to say a word to her or to strangers that they know she's female, and perhaps do a bit of damage control. Should LJ Alanna be told (and I hope she will) she will stress this point until she turns blue in the face. Personally, I am looking forward to the confusion! Feel free to ping or e-mail me with questions and/or concerns. :DDD

For pups who DO NOT know LJ Alanna: Alan is very effectively disguised as a boy in Tortall. Part of this is years of practice; part of it is that she is Chosen by the Goddess and under her protection. As such, things that would normally raise suspicion seem to be largely ignored; the magic surrounding her deflects interest, dulls the obvious. This may not be as effective the longer she stays in Milliways.

Unless otherwise stated, assume Faithful is with her. Faithful is not a normal cat. There is some canonical evidence that he is a minor god. He was given to Alanna by the Goddess and charged with watching over her. He talks to Alanna, but everyone else will hear meowing when he does. On very rare occasions, he does let himself be overheard by others; if such a situation arises, I will make a note if it.

A note on PBs: "Alan's" PB is Claire Danes, while Alanna's is Bryce Dallas Howard. I *prefer* Bryce Dallas Howard, but she looks a little old for younger "Alan." I'll probably be transitioning to using both CD and short haired BDH as Alanna progresses through ItHotG. Also, please to be pretending CD's hair is always red in the icons. *coughs*

comments
